The international environmental protection project entitled "Sketches Around the World" set up by the Paris headquarters of the Veolia Environnement group is the continuation of the international campaigns "Papyrus scroll around the world" and "Streamers around the world".
The program was organised in cooperation with the Association of Geography Teachers and with the support of UNESCO, and its basic message was environmentally aware education, conforming to the objectives of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development.
The students taking part in the program carried out research work in the subject of sustainable development. They worked out development plans to change the area where they live, then on the basis of their own experiences they made drawings to express how they imagine the development of the small region where Hungarian children live or even the development of the Earth.
Several thousands if children entered the competition from 25 countries, in Hungary 8 schools entered the competition (9-11 year old children): 7 from Budapest and 1 from Debrecen.
The results were announced on 21 April, on the evening before Earth Day in the Museum of Natural Sciences.
Two pupils from the winning class and an adult from the school were invited to the international gathering of winners, which was held in the first week of 2006 in the Paris headquarters of UNESCO. The winning drawings from the 25 countries are representing the individual countries in the international exhibition that travelled around the world starting in June 2006.
