Papyrus Scroll around the World

In 2004 Veolia Environnement organised an international drawing competition entitled "Papyrus Scroll around the World".
The task the children were given was to think about what they could do for their environment, for health at home, in the garden, on the street, during the holidays and then to send adults the messages composed in the form of drawings.

The papyrus scroll itself was a 25 m long and 1.2 m wide strip of rice paper fixed to a silk ribbon, which was rolled up onto two large cylindrical pieces of wood when being transported. Every participating town was given an approx. 80x80 cm section to put their drawing on.

The journey around the world started in Paris and its first port of call was Tianjin, in honour of the series of celebrations taking place in France "The Year of China".
The custom-built papyrus scroll was made just for this occasion in China.

The event affected 24 cities around the world: in Australia and Oceania, East Asia, North America, Northern and Southern Europe, and Northwest Africa.

The papyrus scroll arrived in Budapest from Bratislava on 18 May 2004, for which the children had drawn the messages of 15 towns in advance. Hungary was represented by the 4th grade students of the Homoktövis Elementary School in Budapest and the 5th grade students of the Eötvös József Elementary School in Dorog.

The following messages were placed on the scroll in the name of Hungary

Budapest - Homoktövis Elementary School - grade 4 students

Drawing title: "Against environmental pollution for a beautiful, clean Budapest"

The children's message: "We want others to understand how bad it is to live in a dirty environment and we would like this to influence the behaviour of others in the future, so that they endeavour to protect our environment, for a more beautiful environment."

Dorog - Eötvös József Elemntary School - grade 5 students

Drawing title: "The Dorog of the future"

The children's message: "We would like Dorog to be cleaner and more colourful in the future, there to be selective waste collection and for the people of the town to make their environment more beautiful in order to live happier in it."
